Dallas Cowboy teammates Joshua Brent and Jerry Brown, Jr. had everything to live for. The friends were just starting to see their careers take off when a drunk driving accident ended it all. Brent lost his career; Brown lost his life.
The Irving DUI accident occurred at about 2:21 a.m. on Saturday, December 8. The two men had been partying with teammates and celebrities at a Dallas nightclub. They left the club in Brent’s car, a 2007 Mercedes, and were speeding west on the 1400 block of the East State Highway 114 service road when the car hit the curb and spun out of control. The vehicle overturned, traveled approximately 900 feet and came to a stop in the middle of the road. The car burst into flames and Brent tried to drag Brown from the burning car.
Linebacker Jerry Brown, Jr. was pronounced dead at the scene. Brown was twenty-five-years-old and expecting his first child.
Brent sustained minor injuries. He was taken to the hospital after failing field sobriety tests.
At the time of the accident, driver and Cowboys lineman Joshua Brent had a blood alcohol level of .018, more than twice the legal limit. In order to reach that blood alcohol level, a 321 pound man would have to drink about 20 drinks in a four-hour period.
Brent was booked into the Irving jail on charges of intoxication manslaughter, a second degree felony. If convicted Brent faces up to 20 years in prison and a $10,000 fine.
