Dallas Construction Worker Killed in I-35 18-Wheeler Crash

A Dallas man is dead after a tractor-trailer crashed into a construction site in Elm Mott on I-35.

The Texas construction site accident occurred in the early hours of Thursday, October 25, 2012. Forty-two-year-old Josh McGowan of Dallas was employed by Brooklyn Sweeper, a highway construction cleanup company. He was part of a crew that was cleaning construction debris from a site on Interstate 35 near mile marker 345. At about 12:30 a.m., as the crew was loading the debris into a crush truck parked at the side of the road, a southbound tractor-trailer crashed into the crush truck. The crush truck was pushed into a street sweeper that ran over McGowan, causing fatal injuries. The street sweeper also struck a GMC pickup.
A second worker suffered a severed leg. He was taken by ambulance to Hillcrest Baptist Medical Center in Waco and then flown to Scott and White Hospital in Temple. Two workers were taken by ambulance to Hillcrest. There is no word on their conditions.
The driver of the crush truck sustained minor injuries. He was treated at the scene.
The drive of the tractor-trailer was not injured. The truck was transporting 11,000 pounds of liquid egg to a bakery. Some egg spilled on the road.
The highway was closed for almost six hours, but reopened at about 6:00 a.m.
This is the most recent of a string of construction accidents on I-35. On September 19, Manuel Rivas, a 42-year-old highway worker, died in a hit-and-run accident when he was struck by an 18-wheeler while working near mile marker 343.  On October 17, a Michigan man died when his truck crashed into another 18-wheeler that had slowed for construction work in the same area. On October 19, seven vehicles were involved in a crash. All the accidents happened late at night or early in the morning.
