You’ve set up the nursery and brought your baby home. You’ve been busy with feedings and diaper changing and trying out all that new baby gear. You haven’t had time to deal with the pile of product registration cards that are waiting to be filled out.
I know that it’s been a week or a month or even longer since you bought that particular piece of baby gear. But, now is the time to fill out those cards. Don’t wait and don’t throw them out; you may be putting your child’s life at risk.
Many people assume that the cards or online registrations exist only to collect information about consumers. This is not true. The cards allow the manufacturers to warn parents when a product has been recalled. With children’s product, these recalls happen all too often.
Just last month, more than 97,000 Eddie Bauer rocking wood bassinets were recalled. The problem was that a faulty locking mechanism could cause the bassinet to tip to one side causing a suffocation hazard to infants. The recall came after the Consumer Products Safety Commission (CPSC) received reports of 17 separate incidents, two of which involved injury. Parents who sent in their registration cards were notified that they could obtain a free repair kit from the manufacturer.
Also in October, 560 Happy Swing II infant swings were recalled because a child could slip through the opening between the tray and the seat and become strangled if the seatbelt was not properly buckled. No injuries were reported, but the manufacturer is offering consumers their choice of a replacement swing or a Melody Musical baby walker.
For the sake of your child and your peace of mind, please fill out your product registrations.
