Houston Cyclist Killed in Collision with Car After Running Stop Sign

An unidentified cyclist was struck and killed by a car in downtown Houston on the afternoon of Tuesday, August 7. The fatal Texas bike accident was the third deadly bike-car collision in the city of Houston in 2012.
According to local news sources, the Texas cyclist accident took place just before two in the afternoon on Tuesday, when an unnamed 34-year-old male biker was cycling along Newhoff Street to the intersection of Jensen Drive, just a few miles from the heart of the city. When the bike rider approached Jensen Drive, he allegedly failed to stop at a stop sign and was struck in the intersection by a car with the right-of-way.
After the crash, the driver who struck the biker stopped the vehicle, called for help, and rendered aid to the crash victim, who died of his injuries. Although the crash is still under investigation, Texas authorities do not believe any charges will be brought against the driver.
Sadly, the fatal Houston bike accident occurred near the Northside Village neighborhood and the Greater Fifth Ward, two low-income areas in the city that are slated for future improvements that would promote traffic safety, including 18 miles of bike lanes for cyclists. Just two months ago, the Texas Department of Transportation announced that the disadvantaged area would receive a $15 million Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery (TIGER) grant that would be spent on bike lanes and paths.
