The CEO of the largest highway construction company in Texas was at the wheel of the boat that crashed on Clear Lake this weekend, killing a woman and seriously injuring her nine-year-old son.
Clear Lake police the Texas Department of Public Safety, and the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department are investigating the accident, which officials say may have involved speed or alcohol.
The accident took place just after ten in the morning on Sunday, when 82-year-old James Doug Pitcock was riding in his 23-foot boot with a family friend, 48-year-old Marilyn Ruth McCormick and her son, 9-year-old Gage McCormick-Metoyer. The boat was in a small inlet near a creek when Pitcock lost control of the boat and the watercraft crashed into the bank and through the trees.
Both McCormick and her son were thrown from the fiberglass boat during the accident, but Pitcock stayed in the vessel. Pitcock suffered from undisclosed injures and was being treated at Hermann Memorial Hospital. McCormick died of her injuries at the same hospital, while her son continues to be treated for his injuries at Children’s Memorial Hospital. The boy is in good condition and expected to recover.
Pitcock, who owns William Brothers Construction Company, has not discussed the TX boat accident.Authorities are not sure why the man lost control of the boat, but say that speed, drinking, or even a simple slip of the hand could have been responsible.
