Oakwood, TX – Rene Ochoa Jr Killed in Pedestrian Crash on US-79

Oakwood, TX (August 19, 2020) – One person lost their life after a multi-vehicle collision reported in Freestone County on Tuesday morning, according to local news sources. At approximately 6:15 a.m., on August 18, the Texas Department of Public Safety was called to the site of a crash on US Highway 79.

Reports from the accident show that a Peterbilt semi-truck was traveling south on US Highway 79 when the driver attempted to pass a Volkswagen Jetta that was traveling the same direction. As the semi-truck attempted to go around the Volkswagen, near the intersection with County Road 325, the two vehicles collided. The impact of the crash sent both vehicles off the road, causing them to crash into a second Freightliner semi-truck in the southbound lane.

The second Freightliner then jackknifed and struck a pedestrian who was at the scene of the accident rendering aid to the driver of the Volkswagen. The Freightliner was subsequently struck by a southbound Chrysler 300 and a northbound Jaguar. The pedestrian, who was later identified as 23-year-old Rene Ochoa Jr., sustained fatal injuries and was declared deceased at the scene. Two other people sustained critical injuries in the crash. Three more victims sustained possible injuries. All five victims were transported to area hospitals for treatment. The crash remains under investigation at this time.
