Two young children were killed in a tragic car accident in Belton, Texas this week after a car struck their mother’s vehicle as she made a U-turn.
According to the Express-News, 39-year-old Patrice Christian was turning around on FM 436 near Loop 121 when a car broadsided her vehicle. Two of her children, 4-year-old John and 7-year-old Paul, were both killed in the crash. She and her oldest son, 11-year-old Jvon Christian, suffered serious injuries. Two more children in Christian’s car, as well as two young children in the car that struck them, were also injured. The injury victims were transported to Scott & White Hospital in Temple, in critical and serious condition.
This tragic car accident is a sad reminder about how U-turns can be dangerous or deadly. Here are a few tips on how to safely make a U-turn:
Never make an illegal U-turn. All turnaround spots that have no U-turn signs have been marked for very good reasons. Be sure to always follow the law and never attempt an illegal turn.
Make sure you have enough visibility in both directions. A U-turn can take time and puts your car in a vulnerable position. Make sure you can see vehicles in both directions before turning.
Know your vehicle’s turn radius. U-turns can be extremely dangerous if your car is not able to make the full turn and you must engage in a three-point turn.
