Ten Children Hurt After Driver Runs Red Light, Flips Minivan

GRAND PRAIRIE, TX (9/6/2014) — Ten children were hospitalized after a red light runner struck a van and caused it to flip over.

Accident Scene

According to police, ten children (ranging in age from infant to 14 years old) were transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries after the van in which they were riding was struck by a red light runner on Saturday at around 12:00 p.m.
The car accident occurred at the intersection of Lake Ridge Parkway and Polo Road in Grand Prairie. According to reports, the driver of a green sedan (likely a Nissan) ran a red light while traveling on West Polo Road and struck the white van as it was traveling north on Lake Ridge Parkway.
The van was allegedly carrying fourteen children and had one adult driver (although some reports say there were 16 occupants) who were on their way back from swimming at Joe Pool Lake. There were reportedly only two seats—including the driver's—in the van. Police say none of the occupants were wearing a seat belt.
The driver of the sedan reportedly admitted to running a red light, and will be ticketed for doing so. The driver of the van will likely also be ticketed for not properly restraining his children passengers.
