According to the Food & Drug Administration, a recent Ortho
Evra birth control patch study has shown that women taking Ortho
Evra as their birth control method have double the risk of developing
blood clots in comparison with women who take the birth-control
pill.
A twofold increase in the risk of venous thromboembolic events,
or clots in the legs and lungs, was found in women using the patch.
A similar study last year citing federal death and injury reports
also found higher rates of blood clots in women using the patch.
The FDA suggests that the risk of a nonfatal blood clot was about
1 in 10,000 women not using a contraceptive; however, for those
using a hormonal contraceptive like the patch, the risk rises to
3 to 5 per 10,000.
Current on-going studies are also looking at the risk of heart
attacks and strokes among users of the contraception.
Even though the Ortho Evra birth control patch is successful in
preventing unplanned pregnancies, it most certainly is not without
its risks.
Blood coagulations, which can lead to the blockage or bursting
of blood vessels in the brain causing a stroke, have been reported
in patients who were taking or had recently taken the Ortho Evra
Patch.
Other dangerous side effects that have been found in women taking
the Orth Evra birth control patch ranging in severity. Some of
the more serious birth control patch side effects are related to
coagulation and the increased risk of blood
clots that can cause
deep venous thrombosis, pulmonary embolism, stroke, and heart attack.
Furthermore, the Ortho Evra birth control patch
has been linked to an increased risk of breast
cancer and wrongful
death.
At least a dozen women, most in their late teens and twenties,
had passed away last year due to blood clots that are believed
to have been caused by the direct use of the Ortho Evra birth control
patch, according to The Associated Press.
Dozens more survived strokes and other clot-related health issues.
The maker of Ortho Evra, the once-a-week patch
alternative to the pill, is Johnson & Johnson.
If you or someone you know has been using the
Ortho Evra birth control patch or other birth control related patches
/ birth control pills and has suffered a stroke, heart attack,
death or any other injury while on the birth control patch, you
could have a potential products liability claim against the manufacturer
of the potentially dangerous birth control patch or birth control
pill.
