Uterine Tachysystole & Birth Injuries

Tachysystole is a condition which occurs during labor, and may lead to a child being born with brain damage or cerebral palsy. Simply put, tachysystole is an abnormal series of strong cervical contractions (more than five contractions per ten minute period, averaged over the course of 30 minutes).

While contractions are necessary to the birthing process, unusually strong or frequent contractions are not, and could be caused by the administration of the synthetic birth aid known as Pitocin. This is usually given as an injection, and is useful in stimulating uterine contractions. That being said, failing to monitor the fetal heart rate (and/or failing to respond appropriately to any deviations) following the use of Pitocin can lead to serious birth injuries including hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy, cerebral palsy, and other developmental issues.

If you feel as though your child's injury could and should have been prevented, speak with our Dallas birth injury attorneys about your situation (free of charge) by calling (214) 617-1886. We can investigate your claims and explain the options available to you (free of charge) should you choose to pursue legal action.

Strong and frequent contractions can be dangerous to the child.

These strong contractions negatively affect the baby in a number of ways.  For starters, as the child passes through the cervix, the muscles of this organ may clamp onto the baby’s soft and pliable head in a rhythmic manner, leading to head trauma. In addition, the baby might get deprived of oxygen due to obstruction of the umbilical cord for minutes at a time. The placenta, which provides nutrients and blood to the baby, can even separate from the uterus (referred to as placental abruption) and deprive the baby of oxygen. In some cases, this can even lead to uterine rupture.

Fetal acidosis is yet another complication associated with Pitocin-induced tachysystole, and results in the baby’s blood becoming too acidic at birth. This can affect the child’s cells and their ability to carry oxygen throughout the baby’s circulatory system, resulting in irreversible brain damage.

Seeking justice for your child.
